Micah's 3rd birthday

Posted by on | | 0 comments
I still cannot believe that Micah is already three. It seems like just yesterday that he was born. He's so big, he knows so much and constantly amazes with the things that he says. It's new every day and he is the center of my universe more and more every day.

We haven't thrown him a huge party for any of his birthdays, since he is the only child in my family. So my parents, my brother and his wife, his great-grandparents (my husbands grandparents) and our best friend Brie and Emmet. This year it was pizza and salad, and the fruit kabobs I have made for a couple years now, and cupcakes.

I made his shirt the morning of his party, too. Slacker extraordinaire, I am!

We Skyped with my aunts and grandmother, and with Antonio's parents. Micah loves Skype, and I love that the family we have that lives far away can still see him...even though he was acting silly and was so wound up he had a hard time sitting.

Uncle Emmet always buys him the toys HE would like to have (at Christmas he got a full-size light saber, for goodness sake). So his choice of remote control car this year totally won Micah over. He had it mastered in about ten minutes, too.

Oh, thanks, Uncle Emmet. It's our new favorite toy. photo 13907_10152720260650417_108346331_n.jpg

Then the party inevitably moved outside, like it does every year, because we thankfully have had nice weather. It was downright hot! 70 degrees in April is a painful reminder of how hot summer will be. But it meant we got to have a lot of fun. He was christened with the leftover confetti eggs from Easter, then he played in the water, his favorite.

Then since his birthday landed on a weekday, Antonio and I took the day off from work to spend with Micah doing something fun just for him. The weather is the absolute opposite of what we had over the weekend- freezing, windy and rainy - so we opted for the Museum of Natural History to go look at volcanos and dinosaurs. And he loved it! The volcano room freaked him out a bit because it's dark, and the floor is thick glass with red lights and fog under it to look like lava. I had to carry him through it until we convinced him to try touching it, and then he ran through it at top speed, haha.

Happy birthday to my sweet little monkey, I love you!

He's going to be THREE?!

I honestly can't believe Micah is going to be three already. It feels like just yesterday I was holding him in one arm, and now it takes both arms and a lot of back and leg strength because he's huge. He does put away the food nowadays...I see a very empty fridge in his teenage years.

Last year I had a bunch of cutesy ideas for his birthday party, but I think this year I am going to focus on cake. Since I am a slacker and never get half of the things I want done, done. Hah. So I have been browsing some some cake ideas that would be a possibility for his little party, that would also be easy for me to make. (I'm not much of a baker!)

Micah is all about volcanoes. So when I spotted these, I knew I just had to try and find a pan that I could make these with. If anyone finds this kind of pan, let me know - I am coming up dry.

This is super cute, and doesn't look hard at all, though it is bigger than I'd like considering it will just be family coming for the party. Maybe I can just try it smaller.

This is all about the decoration, and looks simple enough, but I would have to special-order the M&M's. Boo.

This is another similar option, but I think it might work better for a girl.

Micah is also into trains (though not as much as volcanoes and bowling), and this looks really easy. Plus I can make enough for each guest to have their own.

I also need to get to work on his birthday shirt. My attempt last year ended up being sort of sad, because the iron-on sheets I bought were the wrong kind and they ended up peeling off. So I want to try applique this time.

Strep, laundry and dishes piled high

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing and butter the bread,
Sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
And out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
But I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(Lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).

The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
For children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

Is it terrible to admit that I completely forgot about this blog for the last week? Awful, but true. Life sometimes gets in the way. I have both sides of my sink full of dishes and at least three loads of laundry waiting for me tomorrow. Lovely.

A little over a week ago I had an extremely sick baby with a fever that reached a high of 107.2. I know, I didn't even know that was possible! It came along with one episode of projectile vomit and a very disoriented baby that I'm pretty sure was delirious and couldn't see me even though I was right in front of him. A rushed trip to the ER did nothing, though the Motrin they gave him worked wonders until we could get to his pediatrician the following day. She diagnosed him with strep, and one shot in the thigh and he was getting better. The last few days of this week has seen a return to the happy baby I am much more used to. I missed him. And he can finally sleep again.

I never get tired of photographing this baby with his eyes closed. Best lashes ever.

Since it is January (mid-January at that - where is the time going?!), I realized my son's birthday is coming up in April and I suddenly feel like I am short on time. How did this year go by so fast? He cannot possibly be two already. I suddenly feel old.

So I've started researching what I want to do for his birthday. It will be like last year, very low-key and probably just family and a few close friends. But unlike last year I want to make proper birthday invites and decorations, and I really want to make at least one of his gifts. Why, hello Pinterest! It's been all of five minutes since I last saw you!

I seriously love these invites. And so easy too!

El Rey (as my mom calls him) will certainly have his own crown.

I just love these. My Dad has Superman pants and shirts he wears all the time and Micah always points at the symbols. I don't think I could make these myself though...I have no idea how to work fondant. I'm sure I could find someone to help though!

And this is what I would like to make for him. One of my favorite Etsy shop owners made this for her twin boys and it is just to die for. She took the time and thought to include her own house, grandma's house, her husband's workplace and other key locations the boys were familiar with. It's an amazing, heartfelt gift that the boys will likely enjoy for many years to come, and this is exactly what I want to give to my Micah.
